Waste Management & Environmental Responsibility in a Dog Grooming Salon

Boops & Kisses Pet Care - Your Pet, Our Care | Environmental Impact

There are several simple ways we can reduce environmental damage within the dog grooming environment.

We would aim to go paperless wherever possible by collecting customer information through online forms. This means information can be stored digitally, reducing the amount of paper used and wasted.

We would also make sure that equipment and plugs are switched off when they are no longer needed, particularly at the end of a grooming session. This helps to reduce unnecessary electricity use and keep running costs down.

When drying towels, we would use the washing line to air-dry them whenever practical, rather than relying on an electric tumble dryer. This reduces electricity consumption and can help save money.

Safe Disposal of Waste

Different types of waste need to be handled and disposed of appropriately. Waste should be separated where possible and disposed of using the correct method.

Dog Faeces

Dog faeces should be securely bagged before being placed in an appropriate waste bin. Dog faeces is considered an offensive/hygiene waste because of its appearance and smell. Double-bagging can provide additional protection against leaks and contamination, although it is not a legal requirement.

Dog waste should be placed in a designated dog-waste bin or another suitable council or domestic waste bin where the local council permits this.

Out-of-Date Disinfectant

Out-of-date disinfectant should not simply be poured down a drain or placed in general waste. It should be checked against the manufacturer’s disposal instructions and, where it is classified as hazardous waste, collected and disposed of by an appropriately licensed waste carrier.

Recycling

Recyclable materials should be separated where possible. This can include:

  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • Clean plastic packaging
  • Other suitable recyclable materials

Bagged dog hair should be kept separate from recyclable materials and disposed of appropriately.

Old Paper-Based Client Records

Old client records may contain confidential customer information, so they must be disposed of securely.

Paper records should be shredded before disposal or recycling to prevent personal information from being accessed by others. If there is a large amount of confidential paperwork, a specialist confidential waste company can be used to securely collect and destroy the records off-site.

By reducing paper and energy use, recycling where possible and disposing of waste responsibly, a dog grooming salon can reduce its environmental impact while maintaining a clean, safe and professional working environment.
