A few handy tips for walking your dog in chilly weather — beyond just popping a coat on and heading out.
🧥 Dress appropriately
Dogs with short coats, smaller breeds, and older dogs often feel the cold more, so a jumper or coat can really help.
If it’s icy, snowy, or pavements have been gritted, dog boots are worth considering as salt can irritate and burn paws.
🐾 Look after their paws
After each walk, wipe their feet to remove salt, ice, and any chemicals. Applying a paw balm can help stop pads from drying out or cracking.
⏱️ Adjust walk length
Cold conditions can be hard on joints and sensitive paws, so shorter walks more often are usually better than one long walk.
🧭 Pay attention to their behaviour
If your dog starts shivering, lifting their feet, slowing down, or whining, it’s a sign they’re feeling the cold and it’s time to head home.
🦺 Be seen
Winter means darker days, so reflective collars, leads, or lights can help keep you both visible to traffic and cyclists.
🏠 Warm up afterwards
Once home, dry your dog off and let them relax somewhere warm and comfortable.
